In the best traditions: Russia began to supply AK-12 abroad

NPO IZHMASH (now the Kalashnikov Concern) prepared two different products for preliminary tests - AK107 in 5.45 caliber and AK103-3 in 7.62 mm caliber. Their competition was made by the products of the OJSC plant named after VA Degtyarev (A-545 and A-762 assault rifles based on AEK-971) and original 5.45A-91 and 7.62A-91 assault rifles in the bullpup layout, developed by the branch of the Instrument Engineering Design Bureau - TsKIB SOO (Central Design Research Bureau sporting and hunting weapons) from Tula.
Preliminary tests did not reveal a clear advantage of any system in any caliber, so the second stage of testing was assigned, at which products from only two firms were presented - the VA Degtyarev and NPO IZHMASH.
Concern "IZHMASH" in the early 2010s was going through very difficult times. After the dismissal of the General Director Vladimir Grodetskiy in 2011, the entire management of the enterprise also changed. The new chief designer was the former leading designer of the Tula TsKIB SOO Vladimir Zlobin, who, instead of using the groundwork accumulated in the IZHMASH design team, decided to create a new "automatic machine of the XXI century" practically from scratch, using nevertheless the circuitry of the Kalashnikov assault rifle. This is how the Kalashnikov Media portal describes the sequence of events.

Nihon Keizai (Japan): Japan and US will track new PRC and DPRK missiles using a network of small satellites

Japan is seriously scared: China is spending record sums on its defense budget and, together with Russia and the DPRK, plans to adopt new missiles that Japanese-American air defense systems cannot cope with. The United States and Japan will tackle this problem together by creating a special missile detection and tracking system. The military balance in the Far East has been shaken. The governments of Japan and the United States will work together to prepare a missile detection and tracking system using numerous small satellites. They will be launched into an orbit with an altitude of 300-1000 kilometers, where they will conduct observation and be used to destroy targets.
China, Russia and North Korea are planning to adopt new missiles that change the trajectory of flight. It is assumed that the existing Japanese-American air defense system will not be easy to cope with such missiles. The system should be operational around 2025. The security situation near Japan is escalating. In 2020, China's defense budget increased 6.6% year-on-year, reaching an all-time high of approximately 19 trillion yen. China has about 2,000 medium-range missiles within the range of which Japan is. It now has several hundred nuclear warheads, but in the next ten years their number will more than double. The Chinese strategy is to use missile threats to "disperse" other countries and strengthen its maritime presence. Beijing missiles upset the military balance in East Asia and strengthens diplomatic capabilities.
